Product Designer & UI/UX Specialist

Part-time Remote - Anywhere

Join a self-funded, bootstrapped company as a long-term design partner. We need someone well-rounded in both branding and UI/UX who can work directly with developers, leverage AI design tools, and help us build sustainable design capabilities.

About the Opportunity

We’re a self-funded, bootstrapped company looking for a long-term design partner, not just a contractor. Someone who can help us establish our design foundation and then stick around as we grow—helping with new features, marketing materials, and periodic refreshes.

The rhythm: You’ll be busy upfront as we build out our initial brand identity, design system, and core interfaces. Then, over time, it transitions to occasional check-ins and project-based work—a new landing page here, a feature design there, marketing assets as needed.

This is part-time and flexible, perfect for someone who wants a stable, ongoing relationship without the commitment of full-time work.

What We Need

We’re looking for someone who’s genuinely well-rounded:

  • Branding + UI/UX: You can create a cohesive brand identity AND design beautiful, functional interfaces. Not one or the other—both.

  • Developer-Friendly: You’re comfortable working directly with developers, speaking their language, and creating designs that translate smoothly into code.

  • AI-Powered: You leverage AI design tools (like MagicPath, Polymet, Relume, v0, or similar) to work faster and smarter—and you’re willing to teach us how to use them too.

  • Flexible Helper: When we need help with a marketing graphic, a presentation deck, or a social media template, you’re willing to jump in.

The Initial Phase (First 1-3 Months)

This is when you’ll be most active:

  • Establish Brand Identity: Create or refine our brand—colors, typography, voice, visual style
  • Design Core Interfaces: Design our primary B2B SaaS application and community website
  • Build Design System: Create a reusable component library and design patterns
  • Set Up AI Workflows: Show us how you use AI tools so we can leverage them going forward
  • Work with Developers: Collaborate closely as we build out the initial product

The Ongoing Phase (After Initial Launch)

This is the long game:

  • New Feature Design: When we add functionality, you help design it
  • Marketing Materials: Landing pages, email templates, social graphics, presentations
  • Periodic Refreshes: Seasonal updates, new brand directions as we evolve
  • Design Reviews: Check in on what we’ve built, provide feedback and guidance
  • AI Tool Updates: Keep us informed about new tools and approaches

What You’ll Actually Do

  • Design Everything: Brand identity, UI/UX, marketing materials—the full spectrum
  • Collaborate Directly: Work with our developers without layers in between
  • Leverage AI Tools: Use cutting-edge AI design platforms to accelerate work
  • Teach Us: Share your AI tool knowledge so we can handle smaller updates independently
  • Stay Flexible: Some months will be busy, others quiet—that’s the model
  • Own Quality: Make sure everything we put out feels cohesive and professional

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Well-Rounded Designer: Strong in BOTH branding and UI/UX—not just one specialty
  • Developer Collaboration: Comfortable working directly with technical teams
  • AI Design Tools: Active user of AI-powered design platforms and willing to teach
  • B2B SaaS Experience: Understanding of enterprise software and community platforms
  • Figma Expert: This is our primary design tool
  • Flexibility: Comfortable with variable workload (busy then quiet)

Nice to Have

  • Experience with design systems and component libraries
  • Understanding of CSS/HTML and how designs become code
  • Marketing design experience (ads, social, presentations)
  • Track record of long-term client partnerships
  • Familiarity with developer handoff tools and processes

Your Design Approach

We care about how you work, not just what you produce. Tell us about:

  • Your Process: How do you start a project? Research? Sketches? Straight to high-fidelity?
  • Developer Collaboration: How do you prefer to work with engineering teams?
  • Branding vs Interface: How do you balance brand identity work with functional design?
  • AI Integration: Which tools do you use and how have they changed your workflow?
  • Teaching: Have you helped others learn design tools or processes?
  • Variable Engagement: How do you manage ongoing partnerships where intensity varies?

The Partnership Model

This isn’t a typical freelance gig. We’re looking for someone who:

  • Cares about the outcome, not just collecting a paycheck
  • Wants to stick around as we grow and evolve
  • Enjoys variety—branding one week, interface design the next, marketing materials after that
  • Values flexibility over guaranteed full-time hours
  • Likes teaching and empowering the team to do more independently

What You’ll Get

  • Long-term relationship with predictable, ongoing work
  • Variety across branding, product design, and marketing
  • Autonomy to work how and when you want (part-time, remote)
  • Direct collaboration with the team—no bureaucracy
  • Fair compensation for senior-level design expertise
  • Portfolio work you’ll be proud to showcase

Example Timeline

Month 1-2: Heavy engagement (20-30 hrs/week)

  • Brand development
  • Core interface design
  • Design system creation
  • Developer collaboration

Month 3-6: Moderate engagement (10-15 hrs/week)

  • New feature designs
  • Marketing materials
  • Refinements and iterations

Month 7+: As-needed engagement (5-10 hrs/week)

  • Periodic check-ins
  • New features as they arise
  • Marketing campaigns
  • Seasonal refreshes

Let’s Chat

We’re looking to understand:

  • How you approach design projects
  • Your comfort level working with developers
  • Your branding and UI/UX experience
  • How you use AI tools (and can teach them)
  • Whether this partnership model appeals to you

No formal pitch needed—just a conversation about how we might work together.

About Openside

We're a self-funded, bootstrapped company — and we intend to stay that way. No outside investors, no venture capital, no pressure to grow at all costs or race toward an exit.

Our Philosophy

🎯 Stay Small, Do More

We believe a small, talented team leveraging modern AI tools can outperform much larger organizations. We're not trying to build a 100-person company. We value efficiency, focus, and doing meaningful work without the overhead of corporate bureaucracy.

🤖 AI-First Approach

AI isn't a buzzword here — it's how we work. We use AI extensively throughout our development, design, and operations to multiply our effectiveness. If you're excited about what AI makes possible, you'll fit right in.

👤 Technical Founder-Led

You'll work directly with a technical founder who is deeply involved in product development. No layers of management, no approval committees — just direct collaboration with someone who understands the code and cares deeply about quality.

💰 Profitability Over Growth Metrics

We build sustainable products that pay for themselves. Customer satisfaction and product quality matter more than vanity metrics.

Who Thrives Here

  • Self-motivated individuals who don't need constant oversight or a big team environment
  • Builders who get energy from shipping features that customers actually use and appreciate
  • Quality-focused people who care about doing things right, not just doing things fast
  • AI enthusiasts who are excited about leveraging modern tools to do more with less
  • Long-term thinkers who want to build something sustainable and meaningful

This Isn't For Everyone

If you're looking for a rocket-ship startup with massive funding rounds, or you thrive in large team environments with all the perks and social aspects that come with bigger companies — that's great, but it's not what we offer.

We're a small, focused team that values autonomy, quality, and real impact over titles, team size, or growth-at-all-costs mentality.

Sound like your kind of place? We'd love to hear from you.

My Story

I've been building software for nearly 30 years — and I still love writing code every day. After spending years leading engineering teams, founding startups, and building the On2Air product, BuiltOnAir community, and InAir Studio agency all around Airtable, I'm now focused on building Openside Studios as a lean, AI-powered product studio.

I'm looking for like-minded people who are searching for a quality position where they can make a real difference — people who enjoy coming to work every day and take pride in what they build.

What I Value

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Family First

I'm a husband and father of four. My family comes first, and I respect that yours does too. Work should support life, not consume it.

⛰️

Active & Outdoors

Living in Utah, I take full advantage of the mountains and outdoor opportunities. I love all sports and staying active — it keeps me sharp and energized.

🤝

Community & Service

I'm a man of faith and dedicate significant time to serving my local church and neighbors. Giving back matters.

🏠

Remote & Flexible

I work from home and believe in the power of remote work. Trust and results matter more than seat time.

Why I Prefer Small Teams

I genuinely enjoy working with just a small group of talented people. We don't need all the perks that bigger companies offer — no fancy offices, no elaborate management structures, no bureaucracy. What we do have is:

  • Direct collaboration — you work directly with me, not through layers of management
  • Meaningful work — every contribution matters and ships to real users
  • Mutual respect — we treat each other as professionals and partners
  • Long-term thinking — I'm building something sustainable, not chasing a quick exit

If you're someone who values quality over quantity, impact over titles, and building something meaningful — I'd love to meet you.
